| Speech on the proposed closure of St. Michael's Psychiatric Unit
02/02/2012 11:20:17
Deputy Mattie McGrath: I thank the Ceann Comhairle for allowing us to raise this matter this evening. The Minister of State, Deputy Kathleen Lynch, already knows my views on this matter. She has visited the St. Michael’s unit at our request and we have had painless discussions on it. I am not going to repeat what Deputy Tom Hayes has just said. However, I appeal to the Minister of State to honour her commitment that all community-based facilities are in place before the unit is closed. So far, it has not happened. In a recent article, a consultant in Clonmel described the closure of this unit as medical apartheid.

| Speech on the Local Government [Household Charge] Bill 2011
14/12/2011 12:13:57
Deputy Mattie McGrath: The Minister and Deputy McGuinness were good friends for a while, but I hear they are going to fall out on this one. We could use many different words and moods to describe the Minister, but he said this would be a short and straightforward Bill. There is nothing short about it, although it is straightforward and direct. It is penalising ordinary householders - the people who went out and built their houses, maintained them and did not go knocking on the Minister’s door or other doors looking for houses. They are the doers and the achievers, those who went out and did all they could. They are the people who are being penalised again here.

| Speech on budget statements

Deputy Mattie McGrath: I dislike speaking about absent Members, unlike Deputies Buttimer and Durkan who fired many criticisms of us across the floor of the House.
